Introduction

Business need:

The Government Electronics and Information Technology Association (GEIA) in conjunction with LOGSA developed and published the GEIA-STD-0007, Logistics Product Data (August 2007). This standard is a replacement for the cancelled MIL-STD-1388-2B, Logistics Support Analysis Record (LSAR). The new GEIA standard provides a mechanism for the United States Department of Defense to acquire logistics product data in support of weapon systems and products acquired by the component services. The standard encompasses data related to operations and maintenance requirements, reliability and maintainability analysis, task analysis, support and test equipment requirements, skills and training requirements, facility requirements, transportability requirements and provisioning and cataloging requirements. These data categories are being subdivided into logical data exchange sets that will be developed incrementally using the OASIS tools and methodology.

The GEIA-STD-0007 Breakdown Element Data provides a standard means to provide for the exchange of the breakdown of the product in focus (normally from a product data model). Breakdown Element Data includes identification of the breakdown structure (e.g. physical, functional, hybrid, etc.), product models, serialized models and the identification of alternate breakdown elements. Breakdown elements and sturcture provide for parent/child relationships. Associated with the breakdown element is its realization through association with a part.

This business DEX defines the part elements of product data generated during the requirements definition and design of an industry or government system, end item or product and logistics product data changed or modified throughout the life cycle of the system, end item, or product. This business DEX defines the attributes to perform a Logistics Support Activity task requirement.

Structure of the DEX

The DEX comprises the following sections:

Terms provides a definition of terms used in this DEX;
Scope outlines the scope of the information covered by the DEX;
ISO 10303-239 Activity Model uses the ISO 10303-239 Activity model to illustrate the business activities that are supported by the DEX;
Business Overview provides a high level overview of the business process / application that this DEX is intended to support;
Business Information Overview provides a high level overview of the business information that can be represented by this DEX;
Business Information Requirements provides a more detailed overview of the information that the business process / application described in Business Overview requires;
ISO 10303-239 Representation provides technical details of how the business information requirements identified in Business Information Requirements are represented in using ISO 10303 239 PLCS;
Template lists all the templates that are used in the definition of this DEX;
Schemas identifies the information models that define the DEX, namely:
The XML Schema for the DEX derived from the EXPRESS according to ISO 10303-28 edition 2.
Reference data lists the reference data classes used by this DEX;
Conformance defines the requirements for applications to conform to this DEX.
