Scope

The following are within the scope of this Data Exchange Specification (DEX):

Identification of the item (product, raw material, or service) to which the obsolescence issue relates.
Relevant data concerning the uses and roles of that item.
Feedback / Assessment of the following items or changes to them:
- Reason for the obsolescence:
  - sole supplier insolvency
  - technological change
  - commercial non-viability of item
  - regulatory change
  - end of support for product
  - end of shelf life of product holding
- Priority of the obsolescence
- Consequences of the obsolescence instance on the parent items in which the item is used, which may be expressed in terms of:
  - cost, quality, time
  - performance
  - safety
- Likelihood of occurrence of the obsolescence, including the predicted date.
- The circumstances that caused the obsolescence to become apparent.
- Reference to any elimination, prevention and / or mitigation actions recommended, planned or undertaken, together with their resource and cost implications. This may include suggestions for:
  - alternative product/service (e.g. alternative sources of supply for product/service with “same” specification)
  - substitute product/service (e.g. part with different specification that will nevertheless provide the required functionality)
  - cannibalization
  - minor redesign
  - major redesign
  - technical refresh
  - bridge buy
  - life-time buy
  - do nothing (ie live with risk)
  - or other means to overcome obsolescence
- The date on which the feedback was made
- Projected/actual end of availability:
  - from manufacturers
  - from suppliers
  - from service provider
  - from stockholding
- Projected/actual impact date.
- Projected/actual date by which implementation of mitigation plan is required.
- Review comments.
- Suggestions for improvement of the Obsolescence Management process.
Identification of the persons reporting and receiving feedback on the obsolescence, together with the person responsible for managing the obsolescence instance.

The following are outside the scope of this Data Exchange Specification (DEX):

The planning of obsolescence management tasks.
The scheduling of obsolescence management activities.
