All products and custom designed items have a limited life in terms of their commercial availability and continued supportability. This makes it essential to consider obsolescence management within PSE programme plans. In complex equipment, the anticipated support life of a product will often exceed the availability of the items composing the Product Design.

All products and custom designed items have a limited life in terms of their commercial availability and continued supportability. From a business perspective, there is an obligation to ensure that superseding items conform to the original specifications required by the Product Design. Obsolescence planning can impact upon stockholding decisions, an Obsolescence Management Plan will need to consider alternate strategies including:

The Obsolescence Management Plan will consider the different rates of change for each category manufactured or commercially sourced replaceable item making up a product. Additional impacts upon the obsolescence of items can arise from changes to environmental regulation governing the usage of materials within equipments.

This DEX allows people involved in the management and procurement of inventory items and in engineering support to report a new in-service occurrence of obsolescence related to the Platform, System or Equipment (PSE), for example of an Inventory Item.
