Introduction

Background to PLCS and DEXs

This document provides the Maintenance plan Data Exchange Specification (DEX).

The DEX:

OASIS PLCS TC Publications are derived from the content that is developed on DEXLIB. It is important to note that it is the publication that is the subject of standardisation and not DEXLIB. DEXLIB is a development environment for the OASIS PLCS TC.

ISO 10303-239 is part of the ISO 10303 (STEP) set of International Standards for the computer-interpretable representation of product information and for the exchange of product data. The objective of ISO 10303 is to provide a neutral mechanism capable of describing products throughout their life cycle. This mechanism is suitable not only for neutral file exchange, but also as a basis for implementing and sharing product databases, and as a basis for archiving.

ISO 10303-239 PLCS - Product Life Cycle Support specifies an information model that defines what information can be exchanged and represented to support a product through life. Examples of such information are:

This exchange enables the transmission of information on a set of maintenance tasks to be performed on a product. This set of information is namned Maintenance plan.

This exchange supports the initiation and progressive development of a Maintenace plan for support of a particular product, throughout the product's life cycle.

A maintenance plan is initially prepared during the latter stages of the detail design and development phases and is continuously assessed and adjusted throughout the lifetime of a system or product. The plan is prepared and established based on a Logistic Support Analysis, LSA, including:

The purpose of a maintenance plan is to specify maintenance tasks necessary to sustain the requirements of use, reliability performance, safety and economy throughout its lifetime.

A maintenance plan may include sub plans covering relevant sub-divisions of the product or deployment environemt.

Maintenance plans provide the basis for planning, budgeting, preparing, performing and assessing current maintenance of a product and its included parts.

Maintenance plans may be produced by manufacturers, suppliers, procurement authorities, users and others.
