The information defined by this UK_Defence Business Data Exchange Specification is used primarily to represent a physical view of the product design and is usually provided by those defining the support solution. It is used as an input to those processes which then define support tasks such as maintenance, planning for spares and subsequent management of obsolescence.

An example UK_Defence process showing the generation of this DEX is provided in Figure 1. Note that in the process model, the class for this DEX is named DEXPhysicalBreakdown.
In this example it can be seen that the “Physical Breakdown” DEX is the main output from the “Identify major parts breakdown” process, which is defined as: "Import or develop a top down breakdown of the physical parts which make up the capability to identify items likley to require significant support effort".
