The information defined by this UK_Defence Business Data Exchange Specification is used to represent a Configuration Management view of the product breakdown and reflects the structure that a project wishes to put in place as part of its Configuration Management Plan. It is used as an input to those processes which then manage the product through life.

An example UK_Defence process showing the generation of this DEX is provided in Figure 1. Note that in the process model, the configuration management breakdown DEX is refered to as DEXConfigurationManagementBreakdown. A Configuration Management breakdown may be considerd to be a type of Physical Breakdown, in that it may use in whole or in part those items in a physical breakdown.
In this example, DEXPhysicalBreakdown has been replaced by the DEX Configuration Management Breakdown information as part of the output from the “Develop initial LSI breakdown” process, which is defined as: "Develop an initial breakdown of the product to identify logistically significant items".
