lead time
  Definition: The amount of time between the first request for the supply of an product instance, or service, from a supplier, to the availability of that product instance, or service at the geographic location where it is required for use.

level of repair analysis
  Definition: The process of determining the most suitable maintenance level for repairing items of equipment.

NOTE    There are two types of LORA:

  • Economic
  • Non-economic

Non-economic LORA is used wherever there are overriding factors affecting the repair location such as existing policy, accessibility, available skills, and equipment size.

Economic LORA is used only where cost of repair is the only variable.

  Definition: A predefined amount of usage which a product instance may accrue before it must be repaired/overhauled/maintained or retired.

NOTE    A predefined life may be extended or reduced to reflect a change in local circumstances for a specific PIF.

  Definition: The amount of time or usage of a product instance for which a life limiting characteristic applies.

  Definition: A generic term for the life of a product from concept to disposal.

  Definition: The cost of acquiring and sustaining a product over its life cycle.

NOTE    The life cycle cost may include the costs of acquisition and development, and the cost of operation, support and disposal throughout the life of the system/equipment.

life cycle directive
  Definition: Directives from beyond the model boundary that initiate or constrain support activities from concept through disposal.

NOTE    These directives include:

  • law and political dictates
  • environmental and safety directives
  • business, organizational and program strategies and policies
  • standardization policy and directives
  • program plans (what, when, where and who)
  • program business goals, objectives, targets and constraints (for example, annual budgets, performance targets, thresholds and skills)
  • information on the organization, portfolio, program, projects and so on related to the product in focus
  • priorities that are from the life cycle owner and affect the feasibility of providing needed support elements
  • decisions arising from consideration of requests to the life cycle operator
  • day to day management instructions that affect support activities.

Business, organizational and program strategies and policies address topics such as:

  • corporate support
  • risk
  • quality
  • procurement
  • contracting
  • configuration management.

Life cycle directives include any exceptional maintenance demands and information from the operational plan, sufficient to define each support opportunity, and to serve as a constraint on "Plan and control support delivery" (A4.1).

  Definition: A structured method of analyzing items of equipment as they are being developed, to identify any features of design that could result in unnecessary expense in-service.

NOTE    Once identified, these areas can be the subject of trade-offs to amend the design in order to reduce these cost drivers.

Note 2: Logistically significant items cannot be made or purchased as they are types, not tokens.
