For example, while, from the point of view of the owner, a mobile crane is a product needing support, from the point of view of a boatyard manager, a mobile crane is a resource that may be required occasionally to lift a boat out of the water. From some points of view, "resource" is simply a role played by an item. For example, while, from the point of view of the owner, a mobile crane is a product needing support, from the point of view of a boatyard manager, a mobile crane is a resource that may be required occasionally to lift a boat out of the water. Simply classifying a Product as a resource does not, however, provide the functionality required to plan and manage resources, or to allocate resources to tasks.

This capability provides the basic functionality required to represent a resource. Its primary purpose is to allow resources to be allocated to task descriptions. The capability could be extended to deal with the recording of actual resource usage, and with the management of resources, though this is not done here. For an overall description of the scope of the resource model, see the referencing_resource

capability.

This capability does not cover the lifecycle of a particular resource representation, or the definition of sets of resources.
