This capability enables a specific window of opportunity in the lifecycle of a Product to be established. It provides each opportunity with a unique identity and name. It identifies the actual Product to which the opportunity applies, the expected location of the Product for the duration of the opportunity, its planned and actual start and finish dates and the authority responsible for defining the opportunity.

The original requirement for this capability is derived from the AAM arrow :

support opportunity

identification and description of an actual opportunity, or a type of opportunity, when work could be performed on a product needing support

This identified the need to be able to define periods in the lifecycle of a product when it is planned that the product will be made available for necessary support work to be undertaken. However, the need to be able to give identify to any defined period in the lifecycle of the product can be recognised as a recurring requirement. Consequently, the capability described here has been constructed to provide an identity to any type of period in the Product lifecycle that needs to be referenced. Examples of such periods include :

commitment of the Product to a specific production run
when the Product is to be configured for a particular role
when the Product is being deployed to a specific location
