The UK MoD is increasingly engaged in incentivized availability or support contracts in which the support of complex assets such as aircraft and aero engines is provided by the manufacturers (OEM) of the asset rather than the UK MoD. In such contracts, there is a requirement for the UK MoD to provide the manufactures with information about all maintenance activities that have been undertaken by the UK MoD organizations such as the RAF.
A high level architecture showing typical exchange scenarios is provided in Figure 3.

The exchanges comprise a series of messages triggered by business events, such as a sortie being flown by an aircraft, a maintenance work order being completed.
A very high level view of the activities involved in maintaining an aircraft is provided by the UML activity diagram Figure 4.

This diagram show the sequence of activities, the trigger points for sending messages, and the messages sent.
NOTE Not all activities are shown.
The messages are detailed in "Message overviews". The PLCS representation of the information contained in each message is defined in accordance with the OASIS Aviation Maintenance DEX.
